Motley’s 2023 Visual Art Contest

Submissions begin February 2nd and end February 23rd at 11:59p.m.

The Motley has been a platform for all student voices at Spring Hill College for over 70 years. Following these values and in light of recent events, our visual art contest this year will focus on one word: justice. Our team is looking for any interpretation of this topic, so please share your perspectives with us.

Please submit your work through our website, making sure to label your piece as a contest entry. You must include a brief 2-3 sentences about how your piece fits into the theme. Please also identify the work’s title and medium.

We are accepting any still visual mediums. Be aware that any photos you send of physical work must be good quality, as that is how it will appear in print.

Nothing obscene or hateful!

Limit 1 entry per artist, unless it’s a collection of pieces. Make sure the work itself doesn’t contain any identifying information, like a signature.

The work you submit will be voted on by the student body.

Top winner will receive a gift card (either Carpe Diem or Haunted Bookshop), and all three top-voted pieces willl receive publication in the Motley vol. #74. Top winner will be interviewed about their work, which will be published alongside their piece in the magazine.

Any other work you may want published that doesn’t fit the theme, please submit for consideration to shcmotley.com.

Submission period for volume #74 extended through February 14th!

We’re looking for poetry, fiction, nonfiction, visual art, anything you’ve created, even if it doesn’t fit into a genre.

We’ve been proudly publishing student art & writing for over 70 years, and we want to hear your voice.

Please submit on this website by February 14th. Email us motley@shc.edu with any questions or concerns.
